Gone are the days when zombie flicks are easily digested as brainless (lame pun intended) gore-fests; the now established horror trope has been adapted to provide actors with some really meaty content; there’s something about the threat of slowly transforming into a walking flesh-eater that makes room for some really great, intimate character-focused storylines (as shown by world-dominating AMC series The Walking Dead). Upcoming film Maggie seems to be channeling this artful approach to a zombie movie and, surprisingly, doing it with lead actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The trailer for the film gives us a first look at Schwarzeneggar in a role he has never even come close to touching before, drawing upon his strengths as a dramatic actor to portray a father trying his best to protect his infected daughter during a zombie apocalypse. The daughter is played by Abigail Breslin who has had some experience with the genre before, she starred in comedy-horror Zombieland alongside Woody Harrelson and Emma Stone.
Director Henry Hobson seems to be going for the dark, moody, and evocative here, watch the trailer below:
Maggie is scheduled for release on May 8th in the U.S. An Australian release date is TBC
