Above and Beyond is a documentary that follows a ragtag group of skilled American pilots, both Jewish and non-Jewish, who answered the call to aid in Israel’s War of Independence from 1948-1949. This band of brothers, comprised of many WWII veterans, would not only see their lives altered in unexpected ways, but would also leave their mark on history. Motivated by the dwindling number of men left, Spielberg aimed to capture their stories before it was too late.
This is the first major feature-length documentary about the foreign airmen in the ’48 War. Bringing together new interviews with the pilots, as well as stunning aerial footage, to present a fascinating, little-known tale filled with heart, heroism and high-flying chutzpah.
Filmed in the U.S., Israel and the United Kingdom, Above and Beyond is produced by Nancy Spielberg (Elusive Justice) and directed by Roberta Grossman (Blessed Is the Match), with cinematography by Harris Done (The Last Days), special effects by Industrial Light & Magic and an original score from Hans Zimmer’s Studio.
