Broad City has, like many good shows. survived the three-season landmark. Many shows seem to leak creative juices until that Season 3 where characters get stale, plotlines become gimmicks and guest stars come in with no real map of where to go in the show. Broad City has thankfully not been one of those shows.
Abbi (Jacobson) and Ilana (Glazer) continue to be spirit animals for women everywhere. Season 3 has some big changes, so for the sake of spoiler alerts click away if you’re not up to date.
For starters, Abbi is now a trainer at Soulstice. She’s slowly climbing up to her dreams, which is good news. Meanwhile, Ilana finally gets fired from her sales job and goes on a quest to find her calling. It seems this season invites a lot of positive changes for Abbi and some not so positive challenges for Ilana.
As well as getting fired, Lincoln (Hannibal Burgess) finally throws in the towel because he can’t have Ilana all to himself. Meanwhile, Abbi and Trey (Paul W. Downs) becomes a pair. Perhaps not a couple, it’s never so smooth for these ladies, but there’s definitely a budding relationship involved.
It makes me suspect Season 4 will be a big shift, especially for Ilana. Considering they leave Lincoln, Trey and Ilana’s job search pretty open-ended it only seems logical that the story needs to address this and make the right shift in Season 4.
In comparison to some gems, Season 3 isn’t the peak – even if it has had some of the biggest changes for the girls. However, Abbi and Ilana’s tangents of things that are all too real are fantastic as well as their perfect references to Mrs. Doubtfire.
The finale sees the girls dealing with a period situation on an airplane, another obstacle we’ve all faced at least once – but probably not the way Ilana and Abbi handle it. After the laughs are over the biggest question is what happens to Abbi and Ilana now? If Abbi and Tre grow as a relationship what happens to Ilana? Throughout the show, there’s never been a moment when Ilana is riding solo while Abbi has a love interest.
They’re usually in the same boat, or Ilana has Lincoln while Abbi takes one for the team. This is new territory for latecomers and diehard Broad City fans alike.
