With the news last week that Adam Pally will be leaving The Mindy Project in the New Year, I was hoping that Mindy would use him immensely during his last few episodes as series regular. Thankfully my prayers were answered, as not only were we treated to a lot of Peter, but we were also treated to a lot of Peter and Mindy.
When Mindy finds out that Peter is living in squalor with his old Dartmouth buddies, she is horrified at this downward slide he’s on. Coincidentally, Danny’s other apartment is up for grabs, and Mindy suggests that Peter moves in next door. Danny isn’t keen on the idea, but Mindy loves having her best friend near her all the time. Mindy soon finds out that Danny asked his handyman about merging the two apartments for his ‘family’. Automatically assuming that he’s talking about a family with her, Mindy swiftly evicts Peter so that this future with Danny can begin as soon as possible. Unfortunately, Peter isn’t willing to go down without a fight and his actions spell trouble for Danny and Mindy.
Meanwhile, Jeremy is trying to be a good boyfriend to Lauren and agrees to look after baby Henry while she’s away. As is to be expected, Jeremy is terrible with children and enlists Morgan to help him placate Henry. Morgan makes Jeremy realise that maybe he didn’t quite think things through when beginning his relationship with Lauren. Considering that Henry’s first word is ‘Peter’, something tells me that Jeremy and Lauren won’t be together for much longer.
On the whole, I enjoyed this episode of Mindy. It’s the latest in a string of Mindy episodes that have been getting better and better, and used more of supporting players Ed Weeks and Ike Barinholtz. Mindy and Peter’s scenes together were great; their relationship is one of The Mindy Project’s biggest successes and they are one of the best comedic pairings on the show (as a side note, Mindy and Peter trying to explain pop culture to Danny was a highlight this episode). Their dynamic also has me despairing over the future of the show. Yes, Mindy has worked without Adam Pally before, but his presence has changed the show’s dynamic for the better, and I’m not sure it can ever go back.
Next week’s Christmas special will be our last Mindy of the year, and I predict that Danny and Mindy will take their relationship to the next level, and that Peter and Lauren will meet under the mistletoe. “What About Peter?” was another in a string of funny episodes that are slowly but surely rebuilding my faith in The Mindy Project after a somewhat lacklustre first half of the season.
