The way Warner Bros. and DC Films have approached the DC Cinematic Universe has been something of the opposite of how Marvel established their Universe. This means that though the “origin” film is yet to come, we’ve already met Wonder Woman, played by Gal Galdot. Those playing at home will remember that she debuted in this year’s successful, but critically underwhelming Batman vs Superman. But this served as but a teaser for her stand-alone film, due out next year. Its first trailer made an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, and you can watch it here:
The film is significant as it’s beating the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the punch with a female driven superhero story. Marvel’s Captain Marvel – whose lead actress was revealed at SDCC this weekend – won’t be in cinemas until March 2019, and it’s the 21st film in the series. In their defense, Marvel have made up for some of its gender imbalance with their Television Universe, with both Agent Carter and Jessica Jones getting their fair share of screen time, but we at The Iris are still wondering where our Black Widow standalone film is.
According to Coming Soon, during the panel that introduced the trailer, the film’s director Patty Jenkins addressed the difficulties of bringing Wonder Woman to the screen over the years, referencing an “apologist attitude” when it came to bringing female superheroes to the big screen, because “the universal version of the superhero was a man”. She quiped, “Why do only white men get to be universal?”. She also promised that the film would feature a “classic coming-of-age story arc”.
Wonder Woman hits cinemas in Australia on 1st June 2017.
