Writers of Guardians of the Galaxy and Gravity Falls to pen live-action Pokemon movie

Variety reports that writers Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch are in negotiations to pen Legendary’s upcoming live-action Pokemon film (yes, that’s a thing) based around the recently introduced character “Detective Pikachu”.

This news follows the announcement earlier this year that Legendary had gotten their hands on the rights to the Pokemon franchise. The deal came about two weeks after the popular Pokemon Go was released; a smartphone game that resulted in the brand once again enjoying its status as a worldwide phenomenon, some two decades after its first claim of that title, and a 25% jump in the stock for part-owner Nintendo.

The way the film will be released follows what happened for Legendary’s Godzilla reboot. Outside of Japan, distribution of the film will be handled by Universal Pictures while The Pokemon Company’s collaborators Toho will take care of the distribution in Japan.

Perlman is recognised for her work in Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy while Hirsch is known for penning Disney cult favourite Gravity Falls. No release date has been set.
